WiththeultimateobjectiveofdecreasingthehighyieldscostofNylon11asengineeringplastic,blendingwithPEwasstudied.Theeffectofthemaleatedethylene-propylene-dienecopolymer(EPDM-MAH)asacompatibilizeronthemechanicalpropertiesofnylon11/polyethylene(PE)blendswasinvestigated.Althoughthetensilestrengthandelongationatbreakofcompatibilizednylon11/PEdeviatedslightlyfromthepurenylon11,theIzodimpactstrengthatroomtemperatureandatlowtemperaturewasimprovedmarkedlybytheadditionof3%compatibilizer.Thecompatibilityofcompatibilizednylon11/PEalloyswasalsostudiedthroughmorphologicalobservationandrheologicalbehavioranalysis.TheSEMmicrographsoffracturedsurfacesdemonstratedtheenhancementofcompatibilitybetweennylonandPEbyadditionofareactivecompatibilizer.Theresultsthatthediminishedparticlessizeofdispersephasealsoconfirmedtheimprovementinthecompatibility.Therehologicalbehaviorrevealedthattheadditionofthecompatibilizerenhancedtheapparentviscosityofthemeltingblends,whichresultedfromtheincreasinginteractionbetweenchainsduetotheimprovementoncompatibilityofnylon11andPE.
